Is it safe to let AI see your screen? A Mac privacy checklist
Screen-aware AI can be useful, but permission is only the first question. Check capture scope, retention, training, controls, and sensitive-screen habits.
It can be safe to let AI see your screen, but “the app has macOS permission” is not enough to make that decision. You also need to know what is captured, when capture happens, where the data goes, how long providers may retain it, and how quickly you can stop access.
The safest default is simple: use screen-aware AI for ordinary software work, limit the exposed area, and keep secrets or regulated data off-screen unless your organization has explicitly approved the product.
This checklist was verified on August 4, 2026 against current Apple and OpenAI documentation.
The five questions to ask
1. What can the app capture?
There is a meaningful difference between:
- A screenshot taken only after you press a shortcut
- A selected-window share
- Continuous frames from one display
- All-display capture
- Screen capture plus system audio, microphone, or input monitoring
Prefer the narrowest scope that solves the problem. A tool that needs one screenshot to explain a Blender panel should not require you to expose unrelated messages indefinitely.
2. When does capture happen?
Look for a visible control or state that answers “is capture active right now?” Push-to-talk and explicit session controls reduce accidental exposure. Always-on tools require stronger indicators, exclusions, and habits.
Apple may show a privacy reminder that your screen is being observed while sharing or recording software is active. Treat that indicator as information, not proof that the receiving service is trustworthy.
3. Where does the image go?
Some products process on-device. Others send frames to their own servers or an AI API. Many combine both.
Read the product’s privacy policy for the actual data path. Apple explicitly notes that information collected by authorized third-party screen-recording apps is governed by those parties’ terms and privacy policies—not Apple’s.
4. Is it stored or used for training?
These are separate questions:
- Product storage: Does the app save screenshots or session recordings in its own database?
- Provider retention: Can an infrastructure or AI provider retain content temporarily for abuse monitoring?
- Model training: Can the content be used to improve a model?
For example, OpenAI’s current API documentation says API inputs and outputs are not used for training by default unless a customer opts in. It also says default abuse-monitoring logs may include customer content and may be retained for up to 30 days. The Realtime endpoint is listed as having no application-state retention, while remaining subject to the applicable abuse-monitoring controls.
“Not used for training” therefore does not automatically mean “no copy can exist anywhere after the request.”
5. Can you stop and revoke access?
On Mac, go to:
System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording
You can turn access off for each listed app. Apple documents separate controls for Accessibility and Input Monitoring, which are broader permissions with different purposes.

A practical privacy checklist
Before starting:
- Close password managers and authentication screens.
- Hide API keys, recovery codes, and terminal environment variables.
- Close private messages and email previews.
- Remove customer, patient, employee, legal, or financial records.
- Use a clean browser profile for demonstrations when possible.
- Share one window instead of an entire display when supported.
- Confirm whether microphone and system audio are included.
During the session:
- Watch the capture indicator.
- Pause before switching into another app.
- Stop the session before opening sensitive material.
- Avoid pasting secrets even if they are briefly masked afterward.
After the session:
- End capture explicitly instead of only closing the window.
- Review the app’s history and delete the session if one was saved.
- Revoke macOS permission if you do not expect to use the app again soon.
- Rotate any credential that was accidentally exposed.
Screen Recording and Accessibility are not the same
Screen Recording lets an app access visual screen content. Accessibility can let an app inspect or control parts of the interface. Input Monitoring can expose keyboard, mouse, or trackpad activity.
An app may legitimately need more than one permission—for example, one permission to understand a window and another to point at a control. But each permission should have a clear feature-level explanation. “The app asked for it” is not a sufficient explanation.
Apple recommends granting Accessibility access only to apps you know and trust. You can review it under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.
How this applies to Skilly
Skilly uses screen context while you ask for help inside software. According to our current privacy policy, Skilly does not keep a library of your screen captures or use them to train a Skilly model. The product sends the necessary session content through the OpenAI API, whose default API data controls are described above.
That distinction matters: our product can avoid persisting a screenshot while an infrastructure provider still applies its documented abuse-monitoring policy. We would rather state both facts than compress them into a vague “completely private” claim.

When not to use screen-aware AI
Do not use an unapproved consumer tool on screens containing:
- Regulated health, legal, or financial information
- Confidential client work
- Unreleased source code or product designs
- Production credentials or administrative consoles
- Personal data you do not have permission to disclose
If your employer manages the Mac, follow its security policy even when macOS lets you grant the permission personally.
The decision rule
Use screen-aware AI when the benefit is clear and the exposure is bounded. Decline when the app cannot explain capture timing, data flow, retention, or revocation.
A trustworthy product should make those answers easy to find.
