Build real 3D shapes using the five essential mesh editing operations. Here’s how to do it in Blender on macOS, step by step — part of the free Blender beginner curriculum.

Lesson 4 of the Blender curriculum. Next up: Modifiers.

What you’ll do

  • Extrude (E): Select a face and press E to push it outward, creating new connected geometry. Move mouse to position, click to confirm. Right-click cancels but still creates ghost vertices — always check for duplicates with Merge by Distance
  • Inset Faces (I): Creates a border ring of faces inside the selected face. Move mouse to adjust thickness, hold Ctrl to adjust depth
  • Loop Cut (Ctrl+R): Hover over a face loop until a yellow preview ring appears, scroll wheel to add more cuts, click to confirm placement, move mouse to slide, right-click to center it exactly
  • Bevel (Ctrl+B): Rounds off a selected edge. Move mouse to adjust width, scroll wheel to add segments for a smoother curve. Ctrl+Shift+B bevels vertices instead
  • Knife (K): Draw custom cut lines across faces. Click to place cut points, Enter to confirm, Esc to cancel. C constrains to 45-degree angles
  • Use Proportional Editing (O) to influence nearby vertices with a smooth falloff — and remember to turn it off when done
  • Use F3 to search for any operation by name if the menu location is unclear

Do it hands-free with Skilly

Reading steps is one thing; doing them while the menus are in front of you is another. Skilly is a voice-first tutor for macOS: you ask out loud — “where’s the core panel?” — and it answers while moving your cursor to the exact button, watching your actual Blender window. It’s the same Blender curriculum these lessons come from, taught live instead of read. Free to start.

Frequently asked questions

What's the fastest way to learn core mesh editing tools in Blender?
Work through the steps on this page in Blender itself, on your own project. For hands-free help, Skilly is a voice guide that watches your screen and moves your cursor to the exact button as you go — so you learn by doing instead of pausing a video. It's free to start at tryskilly.app.
Do I need the paid version of Blender?
No — everything in this core mesh editing tools lesson works in the standard version of Blender on macOS. A few advanced features may require a paid tier, which we call out where relevant.
