Get oriented in After Effects and learn to move around the Composition panel and Timeline without losing your place. Here’s how to do it in After Effects on macOS, step by step — part of the free After Effects beginner curriculum.

What you’ll do

  • Identify the five main areas: Tools panel (top bar under menus), Project panel (upper left), Composition panel (center), Timeline panel (bottom), and the right-side panel column
  • Create a new composition with Cmd+N and set frame size (1920x1080), frame rate (24 fps), and duration (10 seconds)
  • Navigate the Composition panel: zoom in/out with the period/comma keys (. and ,), fit the composition to the viewer with Shift+/, and pan by holding Spacebar and dragging
  • Identify the timecode display at the top-left of the Timeline panel, and use Cmd+G to jump to a specific time
  • Press Spacebar to start and stop RAM Preview, and understand what the green cached-frame bar means
  • Set the work area start (B) and end (N) to limit preview to a short region
  • Understand that composition resolution (Full/Half/Quarter) in the bottom of the Composition panel only affects preview speed, not render quality
